On 18 April 2016 the Court of Appeals, composed of a panel of two international judges and one local judge, affirmed the conviction of the defendant U.M. for the criminal offence of Accepting Bribes.
In 2006 the defendant, acting as a judge, accepted € 10.000 to guarantee the termination of detention on remand against certain people.
The Court of Appeals however modified the punishment imposed by the Basic Court, because certain circumstances were not weighed properly. The defendant is sentenced to one year of suspended imprisonment, with a probation of two years.
